Real Men Get Prostate Cancer Too: Second Edition: The Information You Want Your Doctor to Tell You But You're Too Scared to Ask
Cancer isn’t really funny, of course, but a little knowledge, a positive approach, and a sense of humor can make a difference in your survival and your quality of life. Larry Axmaker says he has never believed that ignorance is bliss—except in politics and how sausages are made. That’s why he shares his story of hope and help with the millions of men who, like himself, would much rather ignore any health issues but were jolted into the reality of the cancer world with four scary words, “You have prostate cancer.” Real men do get prostate cancer, and they should get this book too. It’s funny, irreverent, yet packed with helpful information for every step along the journey to survival, recovery, and a good quality of life. Inside This Book -You have options: In the 21st century a man with prostate cancer has a better chance of survival, and a better quality of life than his father or grandfather had. -What is the number ONE risk factor for getting prostate cancer? And you can’t do a damn thing about it except... -Prostate cancer often progresses slowly and can take years to become life-threatening. So why even bother to treat it?

Clearly I am not an objective observer - the author is my father - but this is an essential book for any man who has a family history of prostate cancer, and pretty useful to those without a family history as well, because it confronts the uncomfortable questions with simple, straight answers about the state of diagnosing prostate cancer, treatment options, what the odds are at present and what's being looked at for the future. Amazing how much has changed already since the first book. And I'll admit right up front: I'm getting my annual exams, no matter how uncomfortable they are.

Even if they have the plague, men will avoid doctors. That's why books like this are so important for conveying that vital information men and those who love them want to know about prostate cancer. There's plenty of good news about treatment and outcome, and Larry Axmaker takes a light-hearted but serious look at the current state of the condition. Well worth reading and makes a thoughtful gift, especially for newly diagnosed.

The cover of this book looks funny and you might think this is a cartoon book. Indeed, there are more cartoons inside. Yet, this is actually a serious and very informative book. The author, a mature psychologist-educator and survivor of prostate cancer, shares with the reader not only his own experience as a patient but also a lot of objective information about prostate cancer and its treatments. As high number of male adults would sooner or later get prostate cancer, this book can help every male person and his family getting prepared to encounter the invader and learn how to live with the unwelcomed guest in peace.
