Awakening The Luminous Mind: Tibetan Meditation for Inner Peace and Joy

Awakening the Luminous Mind is the third book of guided meditation practices in a series by the acclaimed author and teacher, Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche. Tenzin Rinpoche will guide you to bring these simple practices into your everyday life by turning inward and finding what he calls your “inner refuge.” By this he means boundless space, infinite awareness, and the qualities that arise that have the power to transform your life. As you follow the principles in this book and complimentary CD, you will discover greater creativity and intelligence, liberation from suffering, understanding and connectivity, and freedom from the ego that strives to control our life experiences.

In this age of "spiritual bypassing", where the temptation to seek one more teacher, try one more route to enlightenment, buy one more book pervades the counterculture, this little gem is what we all have been waiting for: a map that finally leads HOME. Home to the heart of transformation, directly through the pain of samsara via stillness and silence to the spaciousness of one's natural mind. Whatever the reader's belief system, these simple practices support the direct experience of the sacred refuge within.
Tenzin Rinpoche's distillation of these ancient wisdom teachings and his clear step-by-step guidance in their practical application in everyday life take the reader directly to the heart of transformation.
A word to the wise when using the enclosed CD as a support in practice: there is very little time allowed to fully experience the Stillness, Silence and Spaceousness into which the listener is being guided by Rinpoche's words. If you use it this way, a "pause" function on your CD player is highly recommended!
In my experience Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche is the best of the Tibetan Buddhist masters teaching in English. He has a wonderful ability to give us the essence of the Dzogchen direct method without a lot of jargon and complicated language and philisophical abstraction - something that I probably won't be able to altogether avoid in this review, but I'll do my best. The techniques presented in this book, as in all his works, are simple and direct. As I understand it the method is as follows: find the stillness within the body, the silence in speech, and the spaciousness within the Heart-Mind, and you can abide in the Bliss of natural essence, that which we always are both beyond and within all manifest phenomena. Rinpoche takes us through 5 meditations that help us experience that 1. Our perception of phenomena is a function of our own mental conditioning and has no inherent reality (Vision is Mind) 2. Our mental-emotional constructs are formed from and of Mind, which is essentially beyond all conditioning (Empty), no matter what form it assumes (Mind is Empty) 3. The emptiness or "qualitylessness" of Mind is imbuded with and pervaded by a Luminous Awareness or Presence that is Consciousness itself (Emptiness is Clear Light) 4. This Awareness/Consciousness/Presence is one with and not separate from the unconditioned ground of being from which all manifestation arises (Clear Light is Union) 5. The inherent quality of this union of Clear Light and Emptiness, and our experience when we abide in this Union, is Great Bliss (Union is Great Bliss). Our access to this Great Bliss is simply through the portal of stillness/silence/spaciousness that can be found in all experience. The book is accompanied by a CD of guided meditations, available as MP3 downloads for the Kindle Version. If you can achieve the realizations taught in this book then Peace and Joy are yours. Suffice it to say this is a great book!
This book has helped me have deeper meditation times. It is full of wisdom and truth about how to contact with the source of who we are through the 3 doors method, a way which was taught him by the Tibetans. I will be reading this book over and over again as well as ordering more books by this highly evolved teacher. I only wish I could avail myself of his teachings in person but that is not possible so the books will have to suffice.

A quote from the book which I love is " The moment you feel the unlimited spaciousness of your own mind, you feel incredible protection." "I am the stillness, silence and spaciousness. I have recognized I am, so nothing can disturb me not even death."
I have gone to several teaching weekends with Tenzin Wangyal, who is based in Charlottesville, VA. One at the Open Center in NYC he presented the 5 stanzas of Zhang Zhung or Dawa Gyaltsen, ancient Bon (pre Buddhist Tibetan teaching. This is what Awakening the Luminous Mind is about.. Tenzin is doing some really creative and interesting work. This one is presenting the Non-Dual teachings comparable to Eckhart Tolle, Dzog Chen, Ramana Maharahi, etc. Too many teachers point to the Absolute or speak from the highest view and while that's valuable and good, it can leave you high and dry. Either you've got it or you don't. Tenzin bridges the gap, applies the view of enlightenment to everyday problems like obsessive thinking, physical discomfort, conflicts with others etc. In our deepest Mind we are already enlightened, but our attention is preoccupied with externals and life issues. Here is can be applied like medicine to life's many and complex and painful problems.
I purchased this while doing an online retreat conducted by the author via the "Glidewing" website called "Tibetan Meditation - The Nature of Mind". The book arrived promptly enough that I was able to benefit from reading it while engaged in the course. I found it very useful during the course for which it is the recommended text. Having said that I would recommend it as an excellent starting point for an introduction to the Tibetan dzogchen meditation technique called "The Five-fold Teaching of Dawa Gyaltsen" - even if you don't do the online course. There's the CD which includes guided meditations for each of the five parts of the teaching. The guided meditations on the CD are great. The only drawback is that each individual session isn't very long so you'll have to pause or stop the CD to continue the meditation session to an appropriate length to suit you.
In Awakening the Luminous Mind, the author shares a teaching from a previous lama and walks readers through the meditation around that teaching. It's a profound book that lead you to deep changes as you embrace stillness and let go of your pain identity. The accompanying CD has some useful tracks you can use with your meditation, though I wish some of them had been longer. The quality of the teachings is superb and has a enhanced my stillness work immensely. If you are interested in Dzogchen or simply want to work with stillness, this is an excellent book to work with.
